The unit is held vertically over the soil and pressure is applied via the foot-peg to drive the corer to the required depth. The tip of the corer has been reduced relative to the coring barrel to allow expansion of the soil core without the sample catching and plugging the coring barrel. It is important to keep the corer vertical and to take a sample to the required depth of 15 cm. On removal from the soil, the unit can be turned upside down so that the soil cores can drop through the top into a clean container where they should be homogenised prior to testing.

Extremes in soil moisture will adversely affect the performance of this instrument. It is important, when cleaning the instrument, not to use tools that may score the inside surface of the corer (e.g. screwdrivers) as this will reduce the ease with which a core is taken. NOTE: Some detergents contain nitrates and phosphates and this can affect a soil sample. Ensure the unit is rinsed with water before storage. These core samplers are not suited to taking samples for bulk density measurements. In some instances, such as wet heavy clays, a light coating of oil can be applied to the instrument.
